Anthony, just wanted to say thank you for creating the ski retriever! This device has already saved me time on precious pow days. And we all know more time means more pow turns!!

My scenario went like this….it was a cold, deep, late November day at Crystal Mountain. I was skiing with my normal pack of Pow hounds when I clipped a tree branch under the snow with my left ski and with a loud click my ski was gone, and I was still going!! it took a couple turns and about 50 feet to come to stop in the deep snow! At first I thought to myself here we go again…. But then remembering I had just installed a ski retriever setup on my soul7′s I reached in my pocket, grabbed the retriever unit, turned it on and within a few seconds had a loud beep!! I followed the signal that to my surprise was leading me downhill PASSED where I had stopped. Within 45 seconds I was on top of my separated ski, which had run under the snow to its resting place! Without ski retriever I would have hiked up to where the ski came off wasting a bunch of energy and ski time for me AND my crew!! Thank you, thank you, and thank you!! This product is GREAT.

Anthony

I just wanted to share my recent experience with Ski Retriever. I was visiting my best friend and fellow ski patroller in Lake Tahoe 2 weeks ago, when he showed me a gift he had gotten for Christmas. It was this interesting device to keep from losing your ski in powder. Recalling the number of skiers searching for lost skis we encountered during a huge storm last year and the the storm this year during my visit I decided maybe I should try this out.

Skiing with friends out of bounds at Alpine Meadows in almost 4 ft of fresh powder I fell and dropped a ski. After digging myself out of waist deep snow, we set about using my new Ski Retriever to locate my Gotama. Initially the signal was difficult to pick up, maybe we werent using it correctly? We keep trying to get a better signal and finally got a sense it was downhill from where I had fallen. While it didn’t seem to make much sense, my friend told me to trust the device. As I started moving down hill, the signal did start to get stronger. As we kept going my friend Keith noticed what looked like a single ski track headed downhill. With the signal getting stronger still, he skied ahead, following the track we had found. He found my ski tangled in the top of a small tree sticking out of the snow, about 250 feet downhill from where I had fallen!!

I was amazed at how far down hill the ski traveled (snow brakes don’t work well in powder) and I do not believe we would have found my ski without the Ski Retriever. I have told most of my friends this story and would recommend your product to anyone who skies in conditions where they might lose a ski in deep snow.

Just wanted to say thank you for saving my ski and my vacation.

Cheers

Recently we received an email from Kirk McEwan, General Manager for Sturtevant’s, that we wanted to share with you all. It touches on how well Ski Retriever functions when you’re out on the back country.

Hi Anthony,

I thought I’d relate my experience to you. I had installed a pair on my Rossi’s (prior to the new mount arriving) and went out skiing up at Crystal Mt.; one of them came off, separating the adhesive pad from the plastic attachment point. I didn’t know that I had lost it until the end of the day, and it was too late to go back and look for it. I was unable to return for 2 weeks, during which they received over 8’ of snow at Crystal. But using the handheld device, I came across a signal while skiing in the South back country. I was a good 200’ away when I got a beep. As luck would have it, I was able to traverse, about 200’ to a very strong signal. Then I started digging, down a foot to a crust, and then another 3’ and I found it! (picture of hole with a pole for reference). It took about 5 minutes from the first beep until I had dug it out. If it had been attached to a ski, I think it would have saved a couple minutes. Needless to say I was thrilled. After 2 weeks, not knowing where I lost it, and that much snow, I didn’t hold out a lot of hope for finding it, but I had to look, and sure am glad I did!

Anyway, I’m glad there’s an upgrade for the mount, and aside from coming off the ski, it works incredibly well!

I hope SIA was good for you,
See you soon,

See what GearJunkie has to say about the Ultimate Ski Locator

We were recently notified that because of Ski Retriever’s involvement in the SIA Snow Show 2012, it was being reviewed by one of the coolest product review sites on the internet, GearJunkie. Excitement immediately followed by nervousness, set in. What will GearJunkie think of us? Will they love Ski Retriever as much as we do? The excerpt below quickly put our worries to rest. See what Sean McCoy, a contributing writer for GearJunkie, had to say:

Excerpt courtesy of GearJunkie.com
Locator Beacon for Gear — Blowing out of your bindings in deep powder sucks. One minute you’re having the time of your life blasting through the trees, the next you are stabbing around in the snow with a pole, hoping to find a ski that is somewhere within, say, 30 feet but hidden in the white deep. The Ski Retriever is a solution to lost skis, goggles, cell phones or whatever else you may want to locate with electronic aid. Retailing at $159.99, the kit includes a small handheld unit that will easily fit in a pocket and two mini homing tags affix to skis with glue and a small screw. A handheld receiver unit gives feedback with lights and audio cues to aid in finding buried gear. With a range of more than 100 yards, I’d consider getting an extra set of homing tags for my cell phone and, um, my car even when parked at big resorts. Those alpine parking lots can be mighty huge.

To read the entire article and check out the other reviews GearJunkie tossed up for SIA, visit SIA Trade Show: ‘Snow Gear’ for 2012/13. Again, we want to extend a big thanks to GearJunkie for taking the time to check us out. We’re stoked that you’re as pleased with Ski Retriever as we are.

New Mounting Kit

Needless to say, we were ecstatic to hear such a cool story highlighting the strength of Ski Retriever. This story, however, touched on an area needing improvement on Ski Retriever: our old mounting kit. We discovered that the adhesive we were using didn’t hold up 100% of the time in extreme conditions. To us, any failure and risk of Ski Retriever loss was simply unacceptable. We have since deployed a new mounting kit that we are sure will backup Ski Retriever as much as it backs you up.

For a limited time, we will be sending out our NEW & IMPROVED Mounting Kit to any customer who submits proof of purchase. Customers have the option of sending proof via email to akolb@skiretriever.com or standard mail:
